Friday, 22nd July sees the first Leeds Tequila Festival which will be held at The Tetley, but you knew that already from the heading.
The event is being organised by Rolling Social Events who have already brought us festivals of rum, gin and whisky, in fact they have probably put more people in touch with spirits this year than the busiest of clairvoyants.
I am not normally a cocktail kind of bloke, OK I have been known to down the odd Dry Martini, Old Fashioned and Whisky Sour, but there is nothing like a huge Margarita in a street bar in Tijuana on a sultry summer day listening to a Mariachi Band who refuse to move on until you have made a donation to their pension fund. I rather think that the music on offer at The Tetley will be a little more sophisticated, and the provider not so intimidating.

The main Tequila brands will be there including Tequila Ocho – that’s your actual Spanish for 8 – which is the world’s first Single Estate Tequila. Other exhibitors include Patron, Arette, Fortaleza and Monin Syrups. There will be masterclasses, discussions and opportunities to concoct your own cocktails. Being of a certain age, the only cocktail I associate with the name Tetley is a pint of mixed, how times change.
Knowing that all of this enjoying yourself malarkey makes you hungry, Leeds’s own purveyor of traditional Mexican foodstuffs, Neon Cactus, will be there to provide a wide range of tacos with vegetarian and vegan alternatives, not something I noticed as being in abundance in the aforementioned Mexican border town.

Anyway, if you are a lover of the agave spirit, or just curious, and would like to learn more about it, and knock a few back – obviously – then get yourself along to The Tetley on Friday from 5.00pm. Should your taste be for other drinks then the wonderful Tetley bar will be open, possibly for a Hunslet Sunrise, that’s a pint of mixed to you.

See you there, I’ll be the one sitting in the corner in a multi-coloured poncho, with my sombrero tilted forward so as to cover my face. Please do not disturb!
